Press Release, November 2020
For the second show in the new AGA Works space, Tørreloft presents Sónia Almeida & Magnus Frederik Clausen.
In conversation in and around painting, the two artists take cue from its potential as container and content(s). The paintings take their form on paper, canvas, as fabric hangings, books, objects, clothing. They stand, hang, lie, move; some can we see, some we must initiate contact with and others packed in that we can only imagine. The paintings are vessels and have pockets, from which we can reach in and draw out, exploring tensions in image-making, both visual and physical.
Sónia Almeida’s (b. Portugal, lives in US) work is an investigation into the ways that language is learned, shared and adapted in processes of fragmentation and multiplicity. She is interested in how it relates to questions of agency and power. Almeida’s artworks explore disparate yet connected visual languages brought together within a single work. Her paintings and books express a thorough re ection on the limits, the hierarchized rules, and the directives set by the historical codes of painting.
Almeida is represented by Simone Subal Gallery, NY.
Magnus Frederik Clausen’s (b. Denmark) primary interest is the exploration of the ecosystem of painting. Drawing inspiration from biology and the study of interactions between organisms and their surroundings, Clausen looks at the artwork as a dynamic component of a more extensive network. To implement this approach, Clausen moves between two opposite poles: one focuses inwards and explores the painting’s internal factors; the other points outwards and observes the picture’s behavior within the environment.
Clausen is represented by Jir Sandel, Copenhagen.
A publication with a text by Barry Schwabsky (US) will be available at the exhibition.
AGA Works is the new industrial garage site of Tørreloft, an international program focusing on experimental forms of production, collaboration and experience. In opposition to the original clandestine drying attic, the new location and format presents with overt public contact, where the 4th wall is an open garage shutter to a busy street.
The exhibition is made possible with the support of Rådet for Visuel Kunst & Amager Øst Lokaludvalg.
Opening: Friday the 20th of November, 5-7 pm.
Exhibition period: 20 November - 4 December 2020.
