Press release, November 2022
Andersen´s is delighted to announce the first solo show in the gallery by Martin Brandt Hansen.
Martin Brandt Hansen works primarily in sculpture and installation, and with a significant style that stems from his Greenlandic origin, as it can be seen in his interpretation on the iconic Tupilak figure. Traditionally, the Tupilak is a figure carved in narwhal or walrus tusk, wood or caribou antler made by Greenlanders, often as a souvenir to the white man, to visualize the stories about their spirits. In Martin Brandt Hansen works he adds the western influence from his upbringing in the suburbs of Nuuk, as Disney/cartoon-like figures in his ceramic Tupilak works. These are often installed aside imported merchandise and other items in either a vitrine or on a shelve, as to create his own narrative.
Martin Brandt Hansen (b. 1990) has a Master's degree from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
Kind regards and looking forward to see you.
