Med udgangspunkt i science fiction og UFO-konspirationsteorier trækker Camilla Edström Ödemarks udstilling Circles paralleller mellem utopisk kolonisering af rummet, den dystopiske invasion af jorden og den vestlige kolonisering af Afrika.
Udstillingen fokuserer på den monstrøse fremmedes rolle som et redskab til at forme det traditionelle vestlige verdensbillede, og fremhæver de kolonistrukturer, der fortsat har indflydelse på den vestlige identitet, mentalitet og kultur. Edström Ödemarks værker antyder dermed, at det, der udspiller sig i de mørkeste dele af universet, lige så vel kunne finde sted i vores egen baghave.

Camilla Edström Ödemark (f. 1985, Åland, FI) er en finsk billedkunstner, der arbejder med video, installation og skulptur. Gennem myter, sci-fi og horror stiller hendes praksis spørgsmål til en (vestlig) identitet i forandring og opbrud. Edström Ödemark har en MFA fra Kunstakademiet i Oslo (2020) og en BFA fra Konstfack (Stockholm, 2014). Hun har tidligere udstilling på Sinne (Helsinki, 2019), Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo, 2019), Norsk Billedhoggerforening (Oslo, 2020) og Isthisit? (London, 2016). I perioden 2017-2020 var hun aktivt bestyrelsesmedlem i det kunstnerdrevne Galleri CC i Malmø. I 2021 har hun et FAIR residency på Fabrikken for Kunst og Design i København.

Focusing on science fiction and UFO conspiracy theories, Camilla Edström Ödemark’s exhibition “Circles” draws parallels between utopian colonisation of space, the dystopian invasion of Earth, and the Western colonisation of Africa.
Addressing the role of the monstrous alien as a tool to form the traditional Western worldview, the exhibition highlights colonial structures that continue to exert influence on the Western identity, mentality and culture. The work of Edström Ödemark suggests that what is played out in the darkest corners of space, might in fact take place in our own backyard.
Camilla Edström Ödemark (b. 1985, Åland, FI) is a visual artist working with video, installation and sculpture. Through myths, science fiction and horror, her practice asks questions about a (Western) identity in rupture. Edström Ödemark has an MFA from Kunstakademiet in Oslo (2020) and a BFA from Konstfack (Stockholm, 2014). Her work has been shown at internationally at venues such as Sinne (Helsinki, 2019), Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo, 2019), Norske Billedhoggerforening (Oslo, 2020) and Isthisit? (London, 2016). Between 2017-2020 she was an active board member of the artist-run gallery Galleri CC in Malmö, Sweden. In 2021 she will partake in FAIR artist residency at Fabrikken for Kunst og Design in Cph.
