Organon inviterer til fernisering på udstillingen ’The Luxury of Choosing Pain’ af billedkunstner Sophia Ioannou Gjerding.
Installationen ’The Luxury of Choosing Pain’ består af en 3D-animeret film og en række fysiske skulpturelle objekter, som udforsker forholdet mellem det at være et billede, det at være et væsen, og det at være en krop. I filmen følger vi et kameras blik rundt i et område, som er befolket af virtuelle karakterer: i en scene møder vi en cyborg-statue med et glasøje, som er skabt på forlæg fra de glasøjne, der blev lavet til de franske krigsveteraner kaldet Gueules Cassées, de ødelagte ansigter, efter første verdenskrig.

En anden scene præsenterer os for planter, der kommunikerer gennem fløjtespil. Fløjtespillet, produceret i samarbejde med fløjtenisten Johanne Buus Andersen, udgør det centrale element i lydsiden på filmen, og fungerer som en auditiv tråd tværs gennem de forskellige scenarier, som filmen præsenterer. Gennem referencer til historiske fænomener og ved at udfordre ideen om det der kendetegner henholdsvis det organiske og det syntetiske væsen, stiller Gjerding en række spørgsmål til det ikke-menneskelige blik, samt hjemsøgelsen - eller besjælingen - af virtuelle eksistenser.

Sophia Ioannou Gjerding tog afgang fra Det Jyske Kunstakademi i 2018 og modtog Art Prize, en kunstpris stiftet af Kunsthal Aarhus, ARoS og Godsbanen. Hun arbejder installatorisk med teknikker som 3D-print, animation, lyd og fotogrammetri og forbinder emner som respiration, feministisk teori og fløjtespil med metoder fra mere klassiske discipliner som ikonografi og ikonologi. Generelt for hendes praksis er en undersøgelse af virtuel repræsentationspolitik og de magtstrukturer, som findes i samtidige billedregimer.

Organon invites you to the opening of 'The Luxury of Choosing Pain' an exhibition by Sophia Ioannou Gjerding.
The installation 'The Luxury of Choosing Pain' consists of a 3D-animated film and a series of sculptural objects that explore the relationship between being an image, being a being and being a body. In the film, we follow a camera's gaze as it hovers around an area populated by virtual characters: in one scene, we encounter a cyborg statue with a glass eye, the glass eye being modelled on a specific kind of glass eye manufactured for the French war veterans called Gueules Cassées, the broken faces, after the end of the first world war. In another scene we are presented with plants, who use flute sounds as their primary way of communication. The flute play, produced in collaboration with flutist Johanne Buus Andersen, forms the central element of the soundscape of the film, and acts as an auditory thread across the various scenarios presented by the film. Through references to historical phenomena and by engaging with what characterises the organic and the synthetic beings respectively, Gjerding asks a number of questions about the non-human gaze and the haunting, or animism, related to virtual existences.
Sophia Ioannou Gjerding graduated from The Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in 2018, and was awarded the Art Prize, an award established by Kunsthal Aarhus, ARoS and Godsbanen. She works with techniques such as 3D printing, animation, sound and photogrammetry and in her work combines topics like respiration, feminist theory and flute play with methods derived from more classical disciplines such as iconography and iconology. General to her practice is a study of virtual representation politics and the power structures found in contemporary image regimes.
