ALIEN PAINTINGS & DIORAMAS

My name is Tim Furey and I’m an american artist based in New Jersey.

I went to school at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I think my overall thesis while working is to create a visually dense world that feels familiar and alien at the same time. Most of the time it feels like organized nonsense. I don’t plan out a painting or diorama. Instead…I react to the previous color, shape, texture, background, pattern, or placement of an object in an unexpected way. Like intimate moments throughout a piece that add up to a strange and happy interior life. I sketch a lot. In my sketchbook I can experiment with composition and materials. It helps me understand failures and successes without the pressure of a finished piece. It’s a way to build up momentum for larger ideas.

I come from a family of engineers, accountants, and school teachers. I know I stand out as “the artist” but I don’t feel that way. My approach to image making is very thoughtful and analytical. As if I’m creating and solving a puzzle at the same time. I loved video games and puzzles as a kid and I think I’ve managed to develop a career based on that passion for problem solving… eventhough I’m the one creating the problems to solve.
