Press Release, June 2019
THE UNION IS CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF BPOC ART!
On Saturday 15th of June, The Union is throwing a support party and invites you to an evening of amazing BPOC art and culture. All the profit from the event will go to The Union.
The goal is to raise money for us to organize and continue the creation of The Union - Cultural Workers’ Union for Black and People of Colour. One step in the direction of creating The Union - Cultural Workers’ Union for Black and People of Colour is another step towards creating a platform to fight racism.
At the support party, there we’ll be different kinds of BPOC art. The program contains everything from dance, performance, film screening, live music and djs. By sharing the art of local BPOC artists we invite all members of The Union, our BPOC community and our white allies to come support our project and enjoy a magical evening in the name of resistance and power!
THE UNION IS COLLECTIVE FIGHTING FOR BPOC RIGHTS
In May 2018, the first step was taken to create a platform for BPOCs to talk about racism in the Danish cultural industry. One year later, we are ready to launch The Union - Cultural Workers’ Union for Black and People of Colour as a result of collective work and a desire for changes. A year has passed but the need to have a platform to confront racism is still alarmingly urgent! We live in conflicted times and our lives are affected everyday by colonialism and white supremacy. We see a need to fight against these racist structures that are limiting our lives. We don’t want to wait for a platform to be given to us and that’s why we have now organized and created the very first union for Black and People of Colour focusing on racism in the Danish art and culture industry!
There are no unions in Denmark working actively for BPOC rights and that’s why we are reclaiming the name! We don’t want to function like a conventional union. Racism isn’t static and neither can our fight against it be. We don’t believe in the established systems but want to organize on our own conditions! Our goal is to support racialized artists and cultural workers and show solidarity with the racialized employees at cultural institutions. We see a tendency that Black and People of Colour working in security, kitchen and cleaning are not being paid properly nor treated as the other staff. Time has come to use our individual strengths to collectively raise our voices to fight for better rights for BPOC!
The night will be divided in two sections: We start with the artistic contributions of a varied range of important BPOC artists. Later we’ll have some of our local BPOC djs sharing their music and turning the room into a party. At this event, there are no necessary cohesion between the acts because we want to show how diverse BPOC art and culture can be and how it must be appreciated individually.
This is a night of appreciating BPOC art and cultures. The event is open to everybody and we encourage everybody who identify with our case to come support us and celebrate each other's existence. We strongly encourage our white allies to support this event, BPOCs should not be alone in the fight against racism. However, the event, there will be a mix of different identity and we therefore ask you to be aware of your position and give space for Black and People of Colour. We accept no form of cultural appropriation or disrespectful behaviour of racialized lives. Be open to be checked.
There will be an entrance fee of minimum 40 kroner and up – and an economical bar. All profit goes directly to the work of The Union! ALSO: We only accept CASH in the bar. So NO credit card or mobilepay!
Rules of Bolsjefabrikken: No tags or graffiti - please dont draw on the neighbouring houses. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, please respect each other in our space.
Please help us with our startup and donate what you can to our Firefund campaign. The money is needed for us to create our platform and organize against racism within the culture industry. Thanks and see you on Saturday 15th at our Support Party! Our Firefund campaign runs until the 17th of June.
