Pressemeddelelse, februar 2019

I installationen er skulpturens ubevægelige mekaniske krop kombineret med en videobaseret app, hvis avatar fremsiger monologen An Artist’s Guide to Stop being an Artist, 2019.

ENGLISH:

Join us for the official opening of SMK's new exhibition in the x-room by Sidsel Meineche Hansen.

Sidsel Meineche Hansen’s practice focuses on the industrial complex that connects virtual and robotic bodies with human labour in the pharmaceutical, pornographic, and tech industries. The exhibition AN ARTIST’S GUIDE TO STOP BEING AN ARTIST at National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) continues this line of enquiry, with particular focus ontheexternal and internal mechanisms that control the production and reproduction of artistic labour.

The exhibition is centred on the installation Difficult to work with?, 2019, which combine the sculptural work Untitled, 2018 and a new locking system for the gallery space. Within this installation, the sculpture’s immobile mechanical body is combined with a video based mobile app and avatar that delivers An Artist’s Guide to Stop Being an Artist, 2019. The script, which unfolds through notions of dependency, control and self-authorization, appropriates Alan Carr’s self-help guide Easy Way to Stop Smoking, in order to discuss the artist’s dilemma of wanting to make art while wanting to quit being an artist.
