Press release

Flowers, cats, Koalas and underwear. Showers, bananas, boobs and blobs. Dolphins, dogs and a magic frog – could be poisonous. Fluffy club. Shapes morphing and emerging. Go figure, or not. Transatlantic commuter consumer cave paintings. Extended family snapshot. All the wrong colors at the right time. Couples apart. Come together. A raw romantic melody.

Misaki Kawai (b. 1978, Japan) works with painting, drawing, sculpture, artist's books and objects, clothes, furniture and installation. She combines the magical with the mundane, pursuing a direct expression from brain to hand, trying to shortcut conscious and intentional stylistic decisions. Her work is bold, colorful, spontaneous and driven by artistic intuition. Her visual language, influenced by east and west, combines humor with tragedy, reality with dream, conflict with harmony.

Kawai created Romantic Melody during a 3 month residency in an old naval museum in Copenhagen. Kawai has recently exhibited at The Hole, New York, USA, Malmö Kunsthall, Malmø, Sweden and Dio Horia, Mykonos, Greece. Romantic Melody is Misaki Kawai’s second solo exhibition with V1 Gallery.

We look forward to seeing you V1 Gallery.
