Press Release, May 2019
Johan Peter Jønsson is a documentary photographer primarily working on contemporary long-term projects. He uses photography as a magnifying glass through which he tells the story of what it feels to be a human being. His images tend to revolve around the portrait where he creates a bond between him and the person standing in front of the camera. In this bond he seeks to learn and portray the vulnerability but also the acceptance of the subject to their true self. His images often show the moment just before or just after the act he captures. What interests him however is not the event but the anticipation or the traces of the event in the mind and the faces of the people populating his images.
“Every Body Is” presents work that allude to the human nature, especially the inherent vulnerabilities of being human. The exhibition offers a glimpse into moments of vulnerability that people can be exposed to under different scopes such as gender, masculinity, grief, and the simple essence of being.
Johan P. Jønsson has graduated from Fatamorgana and relocated to Newport, Wales in order to obtain his BA in documentary photography at University of South Wales. He holds a MA in Visual Culture from Lund University, Sweden and currently works as a freelance photographer in Copenhagen. His work has been exhibited in the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle, P3 Gallery in London, Westphoto Prize in Edinburgh and in different galleries in Copenhagen. His photos have been featured in books/magazines and newspapers such as Politiken, Året København and L'œil de la Photographie.
