Press Release, August 2019
On August 9th SIRIN Gallery is happy to invite you to the opening of our new show, “Bodily Extentions”. The exhibition will ask questions about the influence of today’s technological and medical advances on body positivism, gender and identity.
Through a collaborative process, the artists explore how such forms of expression can at once put us more in touch with our own identities by personalizing our appearances, whilst raising questions about what is natural and the effects this can have on our own self-perception. The show will be made up of the three artists Henriette Sabroe Ebbesen (DK), Domantas Smaizys (LT) and Maria Koshenkova (RU/DK).
Henriette Sabroe Ebbesen uses mirrors and digital collage to create surreal imagery that examines how we view our bodies from our point of view and through the perception of other people. Ebbesen's works have received several awards at international photo competitions, and furthermore have been published in magazines such as Vanity Fair and Vogue Italy as well as exhibited at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition in 2016 and Photo Vogue Festival in 2017 and Portrait Now! 2019 by the Carlsberg Foundation.
Domantas Smaizys is an artist and fashion designer who recently graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Through his creative practice he explores the boundaries between gender, identity and fashion. Smaizys’ work has been shown in many acclaimed fashion magazines such as L’Officiel, Less Magazine, British ID, Vogue Italy, Boys By Girls, Fucking Young! He has also received several awards, including from 15. June Fund, International Young Talent Contest, Copenhagen Fashion Film Festival, Designers Nest, Baltic Fashion Award and EyesOnTalents.
Maria Koshenkova works with sculptures and installations. While her main media is glass, she also uses other media (drawings, found objects, photos/videos etc.) depending on the concept she is working with. Maria’s practice explores the vulnerable frontier between existing and non-existing worlds, through her choice of material she establishes a concrete but fragile balance between the real and the abstract. Koshenkova is a graduate from State Academy of Art and Design in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, Copenhagen. Maria's artwork has been exhibited in several international galleries and museums, such as Glass Museum Ebeltoft, Denmark, Art & Minde Center, Nagoya, Japan and Aasiaat Katersugaasiviat / Aasiaat Museum, Greenland.
We look forward to seeing you at SIRIN gallery.
