WORKING ON MY FIRST SOLO SHOW

Hello, my name is Tim Furey. I am an American artist based in New Jersey. Back in January I was offered a solo show at The Bries Space in Antwerp, Belgium. I’d been working on some large commissions at the time so I was really excited to bring those concepts into a gallery setting. I was given plenty of time to work since the show wasn’t going to be happening until November. I’ll do my best to explain what it was like working on my first solo show for the past 8 months.

During January and February it can get very very cold where I live. The ideal conditions for my love of being left alone to develop my world. A lot of my work is about some kind of interior life. It is colorful and inviting yet complex and foriegn. I can’t help but try to find connection to my own “interior life”. I love to keep things simple in terms of a daily routine. I pretty much get started right away after brushing my teeth and other morning stuff. I don’t wait for inspiration to hit me – I think of being creative as a sort of 9-5 punch in and out type of thing. However, like any other job, some days are better than others. The days where I have to glue 30″ x 40″ pieces of construction paper, with no air bubbles, onto illustration board are not fun. But as long as I show up I feel normal.

The show I am having in Antwerp is called “In Flux“. The title is my way of saying the work has been evolving quickly since I started getting shows in 2013. The title for the show is also a way of introducing people to the inter-dimensional strangness I illustrate. I pay attention to how colors and materials push and pull on each other to create a sense of space. Even different brands of construction paper have different textures which then has an effect on another color or shape. It’s all a part of this way of working that is just a gut reaction to the previous decision. Looking at colors, shapes, and materials as having another property gives my work its otherworldly feel. I don’t like to plan things out too far before I start cutting and collaging stuff together. I want to stay in that initial reaction to the color before I totally commit to the next step.

I’ve never been to Belgium so I am excited and nervous at the same time. Oh, also the opening of the show is on my birthday!
